I like my hiking, member of our little KM Club, we're climbing every 1000m peak in SA, but with 18 in the Musgrave Ranges it might not ever be possible.

Also doing the State 8 - the highest peak in each of Australia's states and territories. Six done, two to go!

A bushfire in January 2012 cleared the landscape allowing us to hike up to the summit (previous hikes nearby in similar vegetation was so dense to be moving at 1km/h). Hiked up southern edge of valley to ridge, then north along ridge to Point Bonney, which is marked by a stone cairn with a good condition ABW logbook. Continued along ridge to Tumburru Peak.

Climbed via long western spur - easiest route and the one recommended by Parks NT. Had permission from the Ranger at West MacDonnell National Park (who provided a much valuable 1:50 000 special topo map) and Glen Helen Station.
Followed long western spur, following ridgetop as it was clearer of rocks and vegetation.

After reading a Sydney Morning Herald article, which confirms that the trail ends at Mt Sonder South and not the true summit only due to safety reasons, we climbed the true summit. We used the track notes from Petter E. Bjorstad.
It was tough to climb down from the false summit, having crossed the saddle the actual climb to the real summit was easy enough.

Climbed from the northern side, could not see the summit due to false summit. Upon reaching the false summit, could see not one but two possible summits before us (only 2 possible summits were shown on the 1:250,000 scale map, not 3). Summit not visibly from north, clearly visible from south. GPX file shows climb from Twelve Springs in the north to Terrapinna Springs in the south west. Easiest was to climb would be from Terrapinna Springs or nearby Moolawatana to Lyndhurst track.
Stone cairn now collapsed, logbook presumably buried under fallen stones.

Mt Hopeless only rises about 45m above the surround plains, it's not so much a climb, but an symbollic ending place to hike the Flinders Ranges. It can be accessed from the Strzelecki Track, we flew in by heli from Arkaroola to commence a seven day walk south back to Arkaroola.
Logbook reported as present in at least 2001, but stone cairn which used to be taller than a man in the 60s has now collapsed, logbook presumably buried under fallen stones.

All the Larapinta Trail literature and signage suggests you climb to the summit, when you do not. The cairn, marking the alleged summit, even states it is Mt Sonder summit, 1380m above sea level. You can't miss the Mt Sonder proper summit, laying immediately in front of you, across a small gully some 500m or so to the north east. The false summit is about 30 metres lower than the proper summit. Walking to the proper summit from the cairn would probably be about 2 hours return and would be a difficult climb.
